Inspiration

I invite the viewer to look beyond what is presented to them and connect - reconnect – reflect on their own transformation, while enjoying the quiet and wondering of the mind.

My work incorporates sculptures and 3D mixed-media elements. Inspiration comes from various sources, including: nature, the four elements, my travels, as well as, intellectual concepts.

Whether I walk the busy city streets or through nature, I can’t help but contemplate my surroundings in looking for the light, and the glances of magic. I like to capture the beauty of light – both in its presence and absence— and play with shadows. I am particularly sensitive to the intangible, what lies to interpretation and observation. My intent is to create artworks that call up for an immediate response but also allow space for the viewer to project and reflect what is on their mind. I am fascinated by the Rorschach inkblot test, and to some extent my work invites to such introspection.

I am intrigued by transition, transformation, and shape shifting. I create sculptures to reflect this process as if the art is going through a lifespan. My clear plastic sculptures are a metaphor for melting ice and healing. My life experience causes me to build protection, but my journey of growth allows me to let my icy armor thaw and flow like a cascade of water over me. The transparency of the medium speaks to vulnerability and allows light to come through from within. This illumination echoes a forward movement signifying different moments life has thrown at me. The use of chicken wire expresses a similar evolution, providing a protection progressively opening up and letting life and love within - evoked by the blood red thread. I see the red thread as a vein bringing life and heart-to-heart connections. These sculptures are a liberating expression of the human experience, and my personal experience.

I can’t help but gathering branches, cones or small pieces of nature that fall on the ground and are drying off. While these elements transform into a new phase and form, I like to revalue what is considered refuse or dead into an object that is beautiful and alive. This challenges me along with the viewer about what we value, how we value and about the beauty and elegance in the mundanity of what we observe. There is a quiet and calm beauty in a single piece of wood, highlighted and framed as an icon. To me the branches are also a reminder of our place in nature. When I look at trees and plants, I see branches, how they connect, spread, and interact with each other. I imagine the conversations and see them as a web connecting a multitude of points. Additionally, I see the cardiovascular system, the way it connects and feeds all parts of the body. In the map series, I wanted to explore another facet of transformation. Even if discarded, damaged, wrinkled, torn, or stained, the object has potential for repair, growth and rebirth. I wanted to recreate these mental images and transpose them through various media, particularly the use of red thread, knots, and webs. They symbolize life, repair and connection.

For 2020 “Exposure”, I wanted to highlight pieces that have the transformative nature of light that suggest movement, and invite different perspectives on what we see and experience. I also carried the red thread theme further, because I feel that during that year we were all challenged and empowered in our connection with the world, nature, society, each other and ourselves. These are symbols for optimism and continuation of life.

For 2021 "Friends Expo" I want to highlight two pivotal pieces in my work, markers of my own transformation as an individual and more importantly as an artist. I let the icy armor thaw, as I am allowing my restraints to relax to gradually warm up with my inner creative fire.

When I create, I feel in a bubble. I give myself space to quiet the mind and focus on the present moment. Through the movement of my hands and a particular focus, I feel more connected with my inner self, my emotional state and my physicality. It is a process of focus while it soothes me and allows me to breathe.
